Mindfulness in Everyday Life: Talk +Q&A with Brother Phap Vu

DSCF2429 (1).jpgBrother Phap Vu, a very experienced mindfulness practitioner, was ordained in 2003 at Plum Village, the monastery for the world renowned Zen Teacher Thich Nhat Hanh.  He has a strong and active involvement in building monastic and lay communities in the USA and has regularly visited Scotland. He is well versed in Buddhist history and psychology and is committed to sharing this knowledge with a wide audience. His talk will be focused on how we can all benefit from a mindfulness approach and how we can discover life in the present moment. You can read Phap Vu’s blog here. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session.

The last evening we ran with monastics was so popular we had to turn some people away at the door so please ensure your place by buying a ticket through Eventbrite.

Breathing: Our Way to Freedom
Concentrating and Liberating the Mind

Maker:S,Date:2017-9-1,Ver:6,Lens:Kan03,Act:Lar02,E-Y

This session will continue our gentle exploration of the Sutra on the Full Awareness of Breathing. Thay has written:

“I was so happy the day I discovered this Sutra. I thought I’d discovered the greatest treasure in the world.”

As a way to approach exercises 11 and 12 on concentrating and liberating the mind, we will explore three questions together:

• What is supporting our lives?
• What are we seeking?
• How are we being continued?

Although the session builds on material introduced in the previous ones in this series, we hope the session will also work as a stand alone session and all are welcome.

The session will include guided meditation, walking meditation, readings and chatting in small groups.

We will share a mindful lunch so please bring a little vegetarian food to share. Tea will be provided. Cushions, mats and blankets are available at the venue, but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

The session will be facilitated by Pete & Roger.

When: Saturday 19 May – 9:30am to 1:00pm
Where: St. Marks Unitarian Church, Castle Terrace
Booking: Just turn up.
Cost: A donation would be appreciated to cover the cost of hiring the venue. Suggested: £10 (£5).

DSCF2429You are warmly invited to join us with the Border Collie Sangha at their summer retreat from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th June 2018, guided by Brother Phap Vu in the Zen Buddhist tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. We will gather as a Sangha of all ages to support our practice of Mindfulness. Together we will be seeking positive ways of living and working with the difficulties and challenges that manifest in our lives.

We will look deeply at our lives, and the world we live in and will practice “Active Hope” which is waking up to the beauty of life on whose behalf we can act.

Wiston Lodge with its extensive grounds and natural environment, merging upwards to Tinto Hill, gives us the opportunity to deepen our awareness of Interbeing with Nature and with one another. The doors are wide open for all our friends and we hope that everyone young and old will feel nourished and enriched through the explorations of the practice.

Wild Geese to join with Unitarians in Edinburgh for Sunday 10th September service

unitarians

Our Thursday evening and Tuesday Mindfulness@Lunchtime meetings are hosted by St Mark’s Unitarian Church on Castle Terrace.

It may seem unusual but St. Mark’s is not a Christian community – not a cross in sight – and members of our Sangha are regular attenders.

On 10th of September the Wild Geese will take the reins and lead the service. Why not come along and see how we get on?

Services are at 11 am in the church, with coffee and conversation in the upper hall afterwards. Children sit with their parents for the opening part of the service, and then follow their own programme.

An Evening for The Miracle of Mindfulness: Nourishing Happiness

20170611-DSCF6577-Edit

This is a rare opportunity to spend an evening with four monastics (two nuns and two monks) who have dedicated their lives to practicing Mindfulness in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. There will be a talk, mindfulness exercises and an opportunity for questions and answers.

This evening is unmissable for those interested in finding peace in themselves and peace in the world through the practice of Mindfulness whether in a secular or religious context.

Please join us on Wednesday 30 August 2017 at St. Marks Unitarian Church, Castle Terrace between 7:30 and 9pm.

Admission free but we would welcome a donation (suggested £5 – £10) to cover costs. You can just turn up but to be sure of a place reserve a ticket on Eventbrite.

Organised by the Wild Geese Sangha – who have been sharing this gentle Zen Buddhist Mindfulness practice in Edinburgh for more than two decades.

Jon Kabat-Zinn said of Thich Nhat Hanh’s book The Miracle of Mindfulness: “The first book to awaken a mainstream readership to the subject of mindfulness – a testimony to the power of Thich Nhat Hanh’s elegant and profound teaching.”

Martin Luther King Jr said of Thich Nhat Hanh:  “I do not personally know of anyone more worthy of [the Nobel Peace Prize] than this gentle monk from Vietnam. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity”
